Quiz Night Elgoods – Friday 28th February 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well done to Julie Gilbert, Dorothy Halfhide, Mary Herdman and Wendy Cropp our winners from a successful quiz evening, held at Elgoods Visitor Centre. \u201cThe Dolly Mixtures\u201d team above, won with 116 points followed by second place the \u201cOutlaws\u201d with 107 and third place \u201cDumb Clucks\u201d with 106 points.<\/span>
\nQuiz Master Jan Wildman set 8 rounds of questions ranging from Norfolk SuperDrive to Sport and Countryside. There were 2 table rounds covering such things as organization initials, autobiographies and tv place names.<\/span>
\n14 teams enjoyed the evening including a buffet prepared by club members, and a raffle. All profits to go towards the club development.<\/span>
\nA big thank you to Jan Wildman and Pam Sloat for organising the event, Elgoods for hosting, and all club members who helped out with the food and during the evening.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mini Court Mixed Doubles Tournament – Friday 13th March 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Friday evening saw a mixed doubles tournament with a difference!\u00a0 Four pairs played each other twice over a 10 minute\u00a0 tie break game on a mini court, with slow balls and smaller rackets.\u00a0 This short game uses some different muscles and skills, and some excellent shots were played.\u00a0 The eventual winners were Gary Fitzjohn and Jacqui West.\u00a0 Thanks to Wendy Cropp for timekeeping and organising the event, and a buffet tea rounded off a sucessful evening.<\/span><\/p>\n

Peter Peukert Memorial Trophy – Saturday 14th March 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Harry Goldspink, 15, is pictured receiving the Peter Peukerk Memorial Trophy from Mrs Fay Peukert on Saturday, at a special presentation held at Wisbech Tennis Club. This award, together with a memento trophy, is presented annually to the junior player who has shown the most improvement and commitment over the season. Harry who has been a member of Wisbech Tennis Club for 5 years, received the award because of his dedication, reliability, and commitment to the club, as he regulary volunteers with junior activities, helps at Tuesday Coaching sessions, and has stepped up to play in adult tournaments.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Mr Peukert, who loved his tennis and played very much for the fun of it rather than competitively, died more than 32 years ago and this award is presented annually.\u00a0 He was a member of the club for many years and served on the committee in a variey of roles.\u00a0 He encouraged others to play and got his daughter, Sarah, involved in tennis, and the family have continued to support this award for which the club is very grateful.<\/span><\/div>\n

Wisbech Tennis Club is proud to have decorated a tree at Peckover House for the third year running in their Christmas Spectacular Event. A big thank you to our adult and junior members for decorating stars to go on our tree together with some tennis balls, it looks lovely with some imaginative ideas.<\/span>
\nPeckover House, Gardens, Tea Room and Gift Shop is open from tomorrow Saturday 7th December till Sunday 15th December from 11.00am to 3.30pm. Loads of decorated trees in the house to see, festive food and drink in the Reed Barn, together with ideas for Christmas Presents.<\/span>

\nMeet our resident coach Gary Fitzjohn. Born in Thorney, Gary loved sport from an early age; he excelled in every sport and became captain in football, cricket and athletics. Besides playing football for Peterborough United youth side, he took part in triathlons, cycling, running, and competed in the British Championships in both roller speed skating and ice speed skating!\u00a0<\/span>
\nAt school he was told he could become a promising tennis player but with all his other sports it wasn\u2019t until his football career was coming to an end that he returned to tennis and golf, his two passions, competing and playing in many teams.<\/span>
\nOur four times club singles champion took his coaching exams last year to become a Level 2 Coach, and together with Bruno Maraschin comes under the umbrella of our On2Court coaching team<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\nMeet our new coach Bruno Maraschin. Bruno (who is usually seen with his cap on!) grew up in Yeoville, South Africa, where he first became interested in tennis whilst hitting a ball against a wall in primary school, before having coaching from a early age. By High School he was playing first team tennis.<\/span>
\nHe was employed in South Africa as a P.E. Teacher and was Head of their tennis programme, involved in coaching, fixtures, ladders, and tournaments.<\/span>
\nBruno moved to the UK 2 years ago, and due to LTA legislations, had to retake his coaching qualifications here in the U.K. and is now a Level 2 Coach.<\/span>

1st March 2019 – Adult Mini Tournament<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On Friday 1st March we held a tournament with a difference. Sixteen players took part in an adult doubles tournament on mini-courts, using smaller rackets and softer balls. Matches were timed so play was fast and furious with all pairs aiming to score as many points as possible during each of the 7 rounds. Scores were close with just one or two points deciding many games. The ladies partnership\u00a0of Wendy and Nicky were the eventual winners, in their match against second place Tom and Lucy there was just one point difference. Following the tournament players enjoyed a buffet in the clubhouse.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
Mini-Court tennis is proving popular at the club during the Saturday afternoon Social Sessions. If you would like to try tennis for the first time or are looking to return to the game pop along anytime after 1:30pm on a Saturday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Wisbech Tennis Club is fund raising to create two new tennis courts. There are a variety of fund raising events happening over the next few months, but if you find that you have a busy schedule then one way to contribute is through the 100 Club. This will cost you \u00a35 each month and you may win something as well. At present the 100 Club has raised money to provide posts and nets etc for the new courts but would like to help pay towards the cost of installing lighting for these courts.<\/span>

The matchplay events will be divided into 2 categories; 8 & under and 9-16 years. The 8U event will be an informal competition where children get to learn how to play matches as well as have a chance to compete in a friendly environment against their peers. I am contacting you all to clarify the coaching activity situation which will be in place in the new year up to Easter 2019.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Firstly, I would like to say a big thank you to Laura Brett for running our Sunday Coaching Programme from September to December. The Club\/On2Court were in a difficult position over the summer where we were left with a short amount of time to find a coach for the Sunday programme and therefore Laura helped us out of that situation. So for next term we shall be making some temporary changes to our schedule.<\/span><\/div>\n

Coaching sessions will continue as usual on Tuesday evenings with Gary Fitzjohn continuing to run these. The session timings will be as follows;<\/span><\/div>\n

16 players took part in a restricted mixed tournament on Friday evening.\u00a0 This was played on a timed 7 minute tie break with restrictions on some ‘A’ team players not partnering other ‘A’ team players.\u00a0 The result after 7 games was tied on points but the eventual winners on shots difference were Seth Briggs-Williams and Kitty Hall, with Pauline Maris and Gary Fitzjohn coming a very close second.\u00a0 A buffet tea together with liquid refreshments were enjoyed in the clubhouse after the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A fantastic quiz night was held at Elgoods Visitor Centre on Friday evening organised by Laura Brett for the Tennis Club.\u00a0 \u00a013 teams of 4 people battled it out over 8 rounds of questions, together with a very taxing table top round on Planets, The Shipping Forecast, Monarchs, Astrological Symbols, Greek Alphabet and Weights!\u00a0 The eventual winners were Sue Meathey, Margaret Mee, John Westwood and Sue Pitcher who were presented with wine and chocolates.\u00a0 The runner up team of ‘Thinking Caps’\u00a0 (who donned caps for event),\u00a0 Greg Page, Stuart Jupp, Will Jupp and Jason Smith were also presented with chocolates.\u00a0 A huge thank you to Jan Wildman for setting the questions and keeping order (with her Colander and ladle!) over the evenings proceedings.\u00a0 Also thanks to everyone else who helped with the event, prepared the buffet, made the wonderful cakes, and the generous donations of raffle prizes.\u00a0 Thanks to Belinda Sutton of Elgoods for hosting the event which raised \u00a3756 towards the funding for the new hard courts.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a number of tennis balls on string all ready for you to get creative for this years Christmas Tree at Peckover House.\u00a0 This will be staged between 9th to 16th December 2018.\u00a0 We had some wonderful ideas and creations last year and if you are stuck for inspiration you can always look on the internet.\u00a0 They don’t have to be expensively done, whatever you have at home will do, just enjoy decorating them.\u00a0 Not just for children adults can do one too!\u00a0 If you would like to go into the draw for some free tickets for this event please place your name in the envelope on the notice board or let Sue know.<\/span><\/p>\n

A group photo before our first introductory Halloween Tournament for ages 6,7 and 8.\u00a0 \u00a0The children all played each other in a game of timed singles on mini sized courts to give them match experience.\u00a0 Great fun was had by all in the sunshine, and it was good to see the parents join in with the children at the end.\u00a0 All the players received a certificate for taking part, and Felix Markillie was the overall winner and was presented with a medal. Hot dogs were served after the match together with Halloween themed cakes.<\/span>

Quorn Family Tennis Finals Nottingham Tennis Centre – 10th June 2018<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ollie Beck and his Dad James travelled to Nottingham Tennis Centre representing Wisbech Tennis Club as part of the Quorn Family Tennis Finals.\u00a0 This was played during the Nature Valley Nottingham Open which is being played from 9th-17th June. In the first round the children were divided into 6 groups of 4 couples.\u00a0 Ollie won his first 2 matches and lost 1 match against a couple that eventually went on to be runners up overall.\u00a0 In the second half of the competition Ollie won 1 match and lost the other.\u00a0 The standard was pretty high and Ollie’s group all played lovely tennis with lots of good rallies.<\/span><\/div>\n
Following the tournament they both got to look around all the courts and saw several professional women playing.\u00a0 Ollie also met Tobias Simon a 27 year old German Tennis player who had won his match earlier in the day.<\/span><\/div>\n
Both Ollie and Dad James had a brilliant day at the Nottingham Tennis Centre and were grateful to WTC for organising the event to give them the opportunity to go.<\/span><\/div>\n

In very cold and blustery conditions, children from ages 6 – 9 took part in the The Quorn Family Cup.\u00a0 They played tie-break doubles with a family member in a round robin competition.\u00a0 The winners and runners-up of the two groups played in the semi-finals and the winners – Oliver and James Beck and Annabelle and Genia Giles met in the final.\u00a0 At the group stage Annabelle and Genia gained the points, but after some fantastic rallies in the final Oliver and James were the eventual winners.\u00a0 They will now be invited to play with other Quorn Cup winners at an LTA court event.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLilliana Izzo is the latest recipient of the Peter Peukert Memorial Trophy.\u00a0 14 year old Lilliana is pictured receiving a memento trophy from Fay Peukert at the Junior Christmas Party held at Elgoods Visitor Centre.\u00a0 \u00a0 This award is presented annually to the junior player who has shown the most improvement and commitment over the season.\u00a0 Mr Peukert died over 30 years ago and was a member of the club for many years, and served on the committee in a variety of roles.\u00a0 He loved his tennis and played very much for the fun of it rather than competitively, although he did play in matches.\u00a0 He encouraged other people to play and got his daughter Sarah involved in tennis, and the family have continued to support this award for which we are very grateful.\u00a0 The children enjoyed an afternoon of fun and games followed by a tea provided by the parents.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another week, another tournament at the club. The showers disappeared and the sun shone for the start of a Ladies, Set, Match Social Tournament held this evening. Competition was fierce in short (7 minute) timed tie-break matches. Winning six of their seven matches Debbie and Jane were the eventual winners. A fantastic buffet was then enjoyed in the clubhouse.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mixed American Tournament – 13th September 2017<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A Successful Mixed American Tournament was held on Sunday afternoon, where 16 players changed partners after each set of 7 games to play with another partner. After 5 rounds the Men’s Winner was Gary Fitzjohn and the Ladies was jointly shared between Wendy Cropp and Jacqui West.<\/span><\/p>\n

WTC Singles Finals – Ladies Winner Wendy Cropp who beat Jacqui West 6-1, 6-3 and Gary Fitzjohn who beat Jac Goult 6-2, 6-0. Both matches were end to end tennis, thrilling the watching spectators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Ladies A team of Wendy, Laura, Jacqui and Jane are currently top of their division in the Hunts and Peterborough league after winning their last four matches. Back in July they won away at Stamford (6-2). This was followed by a close game at home against Oundle (5-3), and two more excellent wins away at St Neots (7-1) and Hemingfords (8-0) to finish the season on a high.<\/span><\/p>\n

Benenden Tennis Festival Family Tournament – 25th June 2017<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Wisbech Tennis Club staged a Benen<\/span>den Tennis Festival family tournament on 25th June. Ten pairs took part with each pair having a j<\/span>unior player aged between 9-13 playing with either a family member or a club member. The players were split into 2 groups playing on a round robin basis over 7 minutes as a tie break game. The final was a closely matched game between David Hoyles playing with junior Harry Goldspink and Donald Gustas playing with daughter Gabriele Gustaite. Donald and Gabriele won by 12 points to 9<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Our new Saturday afternoon session of Coffee and Cake was launched last month and this week saw 14 people turn up to play and 3 come just for the cake! \u00a0Anyone is welcome to play from 2.00 pm till 4.00 pm with coffee and cake at 4.00 pm.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0Cost for the refreshments is \u00a31 per member and Tennis and Refreshments for non-members \u00a35.<\/span><\/p>\n

Having won the Wisbech Tennis Club Quorn family tournament last month, daughter and dad doubles pair of Libby and David\u00a0Hoyles\u00a0were invited to the Quorn Finals Day at\u00a0<\/span>Nottingham Tennis Centre on Saturday 10<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0June.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Around 25 finalists from around the country took part, with some very strong\u00a0and competitive players present. \u00a0Libby and David played some good tennis and came third in their group, just missing out on a top two spot which would have seen them progress to the quarter finals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\n
It was a well organised and fun event, and with Libby only aged 8, she has two more years at this level\u00a0to try and progress further in\u00a0the competition.\u00a0\u00a0Libby was given a Quorn certificate and goody bag, including sunglasses, juice bottle, baseball cap and a giant tennis ball. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
In between matches, Libby was able to meet and get autographs from top ranking world tennis players, who were playing and practising at The\u00a0Aegon\u00a0Open in Nottingham, as part of their preparation for\u00a0Wimbledon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
Libby and David would like to thank Wisbech Tennis Club for organising the original event, and all those involved for their trip to Nottingham.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tennis Fed Style Cup Game<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0The treat of showers did not stop play at Wisbech Tennis Club on Saturday as 15 adults took part in a Fed-Cup Style Tournament played in teams of 3. \u00a0Play was fast and furious as each match, consisting of a double and a singles on a mini court, lasted just five minutes! \u00a0Competition was fierce and tactics became important as each team selected their singles and double players. \u00a0After twenty matches were completed the Red Team of Jay Cooper, Jean Brennan and Jane Page were the eventual winners. \u00a0All competitors enjoyed tea and cake to round off an enjoyable afternoon.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

A fantastic afternoon at the club for the Quorn Family Cup.\u00a0 Over 15 children took part playing doubles with a parent on the mini courts.\u00a0 The final saw a determined Libby and David Hoyles up against an equally competitive Lucy and Laura Brett.\u00a0 Libby and David won and will now have the opportunity of a day out at a Quorn Family Tennis Cup event held on the qualifying weekend of a LTA grass court major event.<\/span><\/div>\n

The Red Lion in Wisbech was the setting for our adults Christmas Meal and was enjoyed by 24 people.\u00a0 Meanwhile the club hosted two children’s parties at the clubhouse where food and traditional games were held, including our own version of ‘find the ball on the tennis racket’.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wendy Cropp and Owen Jary retained their singles titles at the Club Championships on September 4th.\u00a0 Wendy beat Jane Page in a thrilling final\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
and Owen beat Jack Briggs in a repeat of last years match, which saw some exciting end to end tennis.<\/span><\/div>\n

Aegon Open, Nottingham<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Martha Hoyles\u00a0and her Mother Sally had a fun filled day at the Aegon Open at Nottingham on Sunday, representing Wisbech Tennis Club as part of the Quorn Family Tennis Finals.\u00a0 They competed with over 20 other finalists from all over England and were presented with a goodie bag which included a giant tennis ball for autographs, sun glasses, cap, racket grip and a pair of tickets for free entry to Centre Court.<\/span><\/p>\n
In the round robin competition playing on mini courts, Sally and Martha won 2\u00a0and lost 2 matches, with some amazing players represented.\u00a0 They then progressed to the knock out stages and managed one win, but two losses, but all the time improving their game.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
They were able to watch an all British singles match on Centre Court, of up and coming stars Daniel Evans versus Liam Broady, in the first round of the Nottingham Aegon Open, which Evans won.<\/span><\/p>\n
Before leaving they were also invited to a Question and Answer session with Jiri Vesely (CZE) who is one of only 3 people to have beaten Novak Djokovic this year. Martha asked him how old he was when he started to play tennis and how often does he train, the answers being 4 years old and 6 hours per day.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
