\nWisbech Tennis club will be holding a Summer Party at Elgoods Brewery on Friday June 24th to celebrate the 120th year of the club. There will be music and food, with more details to follow. All will be welcome, the more the merrier!<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the rain the children at Wisbech tennis club had a fun afternoon. There was some lovely tennis with long rallies on all of the five courts. A big thanks goes to the parents who stood in the rain and helped score and cheer the players on! Tea, cakes and biscuits were very welcome at the end while prizes were given out. Well done everyone \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n

Today was a good day had by all for the tennis and soup tournament. The American style tournament was played under difficult conditions (windy!!) And the eventual winners were the blue team pictured above. We would like to say a big thankyou to Jan Wildman for the lovely selection of soups ,Anne Piccaver for the cakes and Wendy Cropp for organising the event. We’ll done to everyone .\ud83c\udfbe\ud83d\ude03<\/p>\n

On Saturday October 16th \u00a0Wisbech tennis club held a tournament organised by Wendy Cropp and afternoon tea for a special lady, at the age of 90 Pauline Maris is a very active member of the club, playing at least \u00a0three times a week, whatever the weather. A fun afternoon was had by all with Pauline\u2019s friends joining later in the afternoon for a delicious tea and a glass of fizz catered for by Jan Wildman and Pam Stote .The weather was lovely and it was a great success enjoyed by everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n

A good night had by all watching the men\u2019s finals which took place on October 8th. A hard fought battle between Seth Briggs Williams and Bruno Maraschin. The eventual winner was Seth winning 6-4 6-3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

September 12th 2021 – Finals<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Wisbech tennis club had the final of the singles competition, which was held through the summer, on Sunday the 12th September. It was a lovely hot day which was thoroughly enjoyed by spectators. Jan Wildman played Jacqui West in the Plate final with Jan taking the win. Wendy Cropp was defeated by strong opposition Sophie Tjurina in the ladies final. Jason Smith took triumph over Ken Williams in the men\u2019s Plate finals. All competitors played extremely well producing games that were a joy to watch.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the afternoon there was a team tournament played with 4 teams partaking. The blue team took the trophy and everyone enjoyed tea and cake afterwards.<\/span><\/p>\n

25th July 2021 – Mini Court Family Tournament<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

15 Family Pairs played in our Mini Court Family Tournament earlier this afternoon. There were 3 groups of 5 pairs split according to age, who each played the other pairs in their group over 7 minutes. Some players were new to the game, some have coaching, some have been playing for a few years, but the idea was to have an enjoyable, fun, afternoons tennis.<\/span><\/div>\n
The group winners were presented with a medal, and all the children received a certificate. The winners were Freya Harvey age 6 with Dad Drew, Hettie Brewer age 8 with Grandad Kevin and Addison Williams age 11 with Dad Ken. It was great to see so many parents and grandparents join in today.<\/span><\/div>\n

25th June 2021 – Team Tournament<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A team tournament was held on Sunday at the club where teams of four, played in pairs for 7 minutes, against all the other players.\u00a0 The eventual winneres were Duncan Partington, Jane Page, Elaine De Leuce and Gary Fitzjohn.\u00a0 The winners were presented with a mug by Event Organiser Wendy Cropp.<\/span><\/p>\n

9th April 2021 – Junior Easter Tennis<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A three day Easter Holiday Camp for juniors was held at the club from the 6th to the 8th April,\u00a0 under the guidance of Club Coach Bruno Maraschin.\u00a0 Groups of junior players of between 5-9 years of age and older players from 10-17 years of age undertook a variety of drills and skills and enjoyed the fresh air with some fun and games on the courts.<\/span><\/p>\n

29th March 2021 – Club Open following Lockdown\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

We are pleased to announce that we are now open for play following government guidelines.\u00a0 Only Monday and Thursday Clubnights need to be booked at present with Jacqui as usual.\u00a0 \u00a0The Clubhouse will be open for toilet facilities only.<\/span><\/p>\n

6th January 2021 –\u00a0 Club Closure<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Since the whole country has been put in Tier 5, we are sorry to announce that the club will have to close again until further notice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>23rd December 2020<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Following yesterday’s announcement, that we are now in a tier 4 area, all doubles play at the club will need to cease from Boxing Day, except for people from the same household.\u00a0 Fortunately singles play is permitted and the club will stay open for this to continue. Courts will need to be booked in advance via the website.<\/span><\/p>\n

All Club Sessions are cancelled until further notice.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Singles Box League which is due to commence in early January\u00a0already has a pleasing number of entries – thank you to everyone who has entered.\u00a0 If you haven’t already paid via BACS or in cash please can I ask you to do so .<\/span><\/p>\n

As all Club Sessions and doubles play are now cancelled it is expected that more members will return to playing singles and the decision has been made to ‘reopen’ entry to the Singles Box League.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Club Re-opening – 2nd December 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The club will reopen on Wednesday 2nd December and the new tarmac courts are ready to use, (although they have not been painted and only have temporary lines on till the Spring), court 3 is a full size and court 4 is a singles court.\u00a0 Court 5 is the mini court suitable for short tennis, juniors and the less able when booking.\u00a0 Courts 1 & 2 are the all weather artificial clay courts which need sweeping with the brushes at the end of each session.<\/span><\/p>\n

Half Term Halloween Fun Tennis – 27th October 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Tuesday and Wednesday of Half Term were busy with three groups each day, enjoying a session of coaching, games, and match practise, under the guidance of Coach Gary Fitzjohn assisted by Jacqui West.\u00a0 Some of the juniors wore Halloween costumes and all the juniors enjoyed letting off steam in the fresh air.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fed Style Tournament – 13th September 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A Fed Style Tournament was played in the afternoon to complete finals day.\u00a0 Five teams of five players competed against the other teams at the same time with one player on the mini court playing singles and the other two couples playing pairs.\u00a0 Each game was over eight minutes and a bonus point was given if anyone scored over 15 points.\u00a0 \u00a0At the end of the games\u00a0 the team led by Genia and Seth both had equal points and the outcome was made on who had won the most bonus points.\u00a0 \u00a0The team above of Simon Hester, Dylan Slow, Dave Brown, Genia Giles (Captain) and Sophie Tjurina were the winners.<\/span><\/p>\n

Plate Finals – 13th September 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Jacqui West and Jason Smith won the first Plate Finals Competitions played at the club.\u00a0 This is for competitors who are knocked out of the Singles Championships in the first round.\u00a0 Jacqui played Anne Piccaver and got off to a good start winning the first 6-1 but Anne fought back in the second set but lost 6-3.\u00a0 Andy Lister and Jason Smith had a very hard hitting game in which Jason took the first set 6-3.\u00a0 The second set was a marathon and went to a tie-break, and after a two hour match Jason won 7-6.<\/span><\/p>\n

Club Singles Championships – 13th September 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sophie Tjurina 14, and Seth Briggs-Williams 15, both retained their Club Singles Titles again this year.\u00a0 Sophie was aways in control against Wendy Cropp, a previous six times holder of the title, and won 6-1, 6-0.\u00a0 Seth who was playing club coach Bruno Maraschin in an eagerly anticipated match, which did not disappoint.\u00a0 The first set was a thrilling close one of 6-4 to Seth, with both players showing full control of some exceptional shots.\u00a0 The second set Seth won 6-2, which was the best final the club has seen for many years.\u00a0 Both winners are pupils at Thomas Clarkson Academy in Wisbech.<\/span><\/p>\n

New Court Development – 10th August 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We are excited to inform you that the development of our two tarmacadam courts started on Monday and is expected to take 10 weeks to complete.\u00a0 The club is grateful to club member John Jewson who has helped with the initial ground works by removing the soil from the site free of charge.<\/span><\/p>\n

This latest project is only possible due to a great deal of hard work from members of the committee to apply for and secure the funding, from a number of different sources, being Amey,\u00a0 Cambs LTA, Robert Hall Trust and Sport England.\u00a0 The club itself is also contributing over \u00a325000 which has been raised from member subs, and fundraising over the last few years.<\/span><\/p>\n
